my rituals: san diego magazine associate art director gloria tebelman

February 14, 2014

Gloria Tebelman, San Diego Magazine

Today’s my rituals is a treat for me because it comes to us from my good friend and San Diego Magazine associate art director, Gloria Tebelman. (I’m not big on Valentine’s Day, but I might as well give a nod to the holiday by offering today’s space to a good friend.) It’s no surprise why Gloria and I hit it off. She loves good food, working out (she’s a marathoner!), appreciates early mornings versus late nights out and loves to travel. To top it off, even though Gloria was raised just outside San Diego, her soul is a New Yorker’s. She has that stylish, cultural, driven je ne sais quoi that I thought I would never see again after leaving NYC.

I’m sort of in awe of how much she can accomplish in a day — waking up at 5 a.m. must have something to do with it — so I wanted to know more about her rituals. Today she discusses her love for drip coffee, Vogue and favorite spots to run in the city.

my rituals: maggie waller of type & title

February 7, 2014

portrait

If I could go back to college, I’d change very little — except my majors. I doubled in journalism and psychology, but now I wish that second major was design or art. More and more I’m fascinated by typography, lettering and graphic design, and since college is a somewhat distant memory (yikes), I feed my curiosity with tons of design-minded blogs, like Maggie’s Waller’s Type & Title, which curates all things cool in typography and hand lettering. Maggie, a recent San Diego transplant by way of Iowa and Texas, also owns her own design studio, where she offers paper goods, temporary tattoos and custom projects. I love how her blog acts like a peek into the creative process with glimpses of inspiration and mid-stage projects.

Today Maggie tells us why she’s armed with a million notebooks, what she does for 30 minutes each day and coffee–always coffee.

Name: Maggie Waller
Age: 26
Hometown: Boonville, MO
Current city: San Diego, CA
Profession: Freelance graphic designer & letterer // type & title read more

my rituals: editor, writer + beauty blogger shyema azam

January 24, 2014

shyema-azam-profile

I’m so excited to welcome magazine editor, beauty blogger and my dear friend Shyema Azam to my rituals today! I met Shyema during my early years in New York, and we became fast friends probably because she’s one of the kindest, most hardworking and selfless people I know. Shyema was at the forefront of the blogging explosion; I was actually with her the night her blog, Beauty and the Feast, was designed and live! She was also a huge inspiration for my own blogging career — I started my very first blog (which is embarrassing/humbling to look at now) with her encouragement — and thanks to her I finally let my guard down about that weird thing called Twitter.

With her always changing schedule and multiple beauty events throughout the week, no week is ever the same for this gal. Today she talks about four routines that keep her sane, energized and well-kempt.

my rituals: ann-marie espinoza of ann-marie loves

December 20, 2013

I’m not saying I have a unique blog necessarily, but I do find it hard to peg it to one category. Food? Yes. Fashion? Sometimes. Life musings? Occasionally. Pets? Oh yeah. It’s a varied assortment of everything that matters most to me, and that’s the same reason I fell in love with Ann-Marie Espinoza’s blog, Ann-Marie Loves, a curated collection of happy, honest things and thoughts. She writes about everything from working at home and thrifting to wedding planning and crafting, and runs an online paper products shop with charming stamps, prints and more.

The Pasadena-residing designer/stylist/crafter oozes that sunny California aura — she went to college in San Diego, too! — so of course I asked her to share her rituals. Today she tells us about the joys of getting up at 10 a.m. and the key ingredient to productivity.

our rituals: theresa anderson and julie o’brien of sweet paper

December 13, 2013

Before I moved to San Diego, I had a couple of months to enjoy home-home (New Jersey) and prep for the move. I made sure to get a list of antique shops and restaurants ready, and during my research I stumbled upon an adorable stationery store called Sweet Paper located in La Jolla.

As it turns out, it’s just a few steps from my favorite brunch spot, The Cottage, so it didn’t take long for me to cross it off the list. They have such a well-edited selection of greeting cards, calendars and other paper goods with more goodies at the new VI Star in Little Italy. So basically, between downtown and La Jolla, your paper needs are covered.

Today Sweet Paper co-owners (and sisters!) Theresa Anderson (right) and Julie O’Brien (left) are sharing their rituals. It’s not easy running a store and raising a family, but they do it…with help from coffee and antique shops.

my rituals: digital media strategist and freelance stylist julia wheeler

November 22, 2013

I’m obsessed with reading anyone’s rituals, but I’m particularly intrigued by the routines and habits of freelancers. I’ve been working for myself for nearly a year, and with it has come so much more flexibility. I have time to run errands during the week, take care of a dog the way I always dreamed of (with time) and go out for breakfast if I feel like it. Yeah, it’s pretty great (sometimes).

So today I’m sharing the rituals of fellow freelancer Julia Wheeler, a digital media strategist and freelance stylist, who not only juggles multiple projects, but also owns a dog and is expecting her first baby! Today she talks 6am dog walks, Scrabble Mondays and breakfast burritos.

my rituals: photographer tana gandhi

November 8, 2013

I’ve always loved bling, glitter, volume and color of the retina-blinding variety, but recently, I’ve begun to appreciate a simple, streamlined and almost-bare aesthetic. Chalk it up to my pared-down SoCal lifestyle or a new curiosity about photography and graphic design, but I’m glad I did because it’s helped me discover pretty talented people, like Tana Gandhi, an Orange County-based photographer who has an amazing knack for making simple images pop off the screen. Her pictures are crisp, clever and a great reminder that less is more.

Today Tana shares the rituals that motivate her — everything from her Breaking Bad habit to the impressive list of things she does before going to work. Check it out:
