my rituals: photographer tana gandhi

November 8, 2013

I’ve always loved bling, glitter, volume and color of the retina-blinding variety, but recently, I’ve begun to appreciate a simple, streamlined and almost-bare aesthetic. Chalk it up to my pared-down SoCal lifestyle or a new curiosity about photography and graphic design, but I’m glad I did because it’s helped me discover pretty talented people, like Tana Gandhi, an Orange County-based photographer who has an amazing knack for making simple images pop off the screen. Her pictures are crisp, clever and a great reminder that less is more.

Today Tana shares the rituals that motivate her — everything from her Breaking Bad habit to the impressive list of things she does before going to work. Check it out:

Morning rituals.
For years, I wanted to wake up bright and early and each night I’d say, tomorrow’s the day…only to find out that I’ll hit snooze about 5 times! However, about 2 months ago I finally started waking up early (6 a.m.). I found a routine that I truly enjoyed and that is to wake up early, work out, take photos in natural light before I head to work. I look forward to it every morning and feel creatively satisfied to start the rest of the day.

Evening rituals.
Now that I’ve been waking up early, I’ve been going to bed pretty early (11 p.m.). Right before bed, I gather all the props and accessories I’d need for a morning photo session and try to visualize what I’ll be working on so I won’t be too rushed the next day.

Blogging/social media.
Ever since I started blogging, I’ve really enjoyed connecting with other creative folks, reading their blogs and building a supportive community out of it all. One of my things I look forward to every time I can is to catch up on my blogroll with some coffee and have a go at it.

Breaking Bad with the hubby.
I thought I wouldn’t ever get into a show like this, but darn it, it’s so addictive! I look forward to evenings catching up on episodes (currently at the end of season 4) right before calling it a night. It’s a nice time to relax with each other and unwind (with probably the most intense show haha)

Thanks, Tana! You can also find her on Instagram and Twitter.
