week (and weekend) recap

February 17, 2014

A little glimpse of my last week and life as of late…

Indian cow statue that brings good luck // My SoCal'd Life,a lifestyle blog

As I mentioned, my parents were in town last week, and in between the sightseeing, eating and subsequent food comas, my mom gave me this statue, which once belonged to her grandmother. The cow, which is meant to bring you good luck, has special meaning. Back in the day, some people in India would bring cows in to bless a new home. Now this little guy is in our home to hopefully send some good vibes our way.

kindle-gone-girlI wanted my parents to see as much as possible, but that also meant I was exhausted from playing tour guide. By the time they left, I needed some R&R (and so did Teddy and Eaman I guess). At first I struggled with the idea of taking an entire Saturday off after basically taking a whole week off, but I’m working on my inability to just be, so I put on my hoodie, grabbed my Kindle and got way deep into Gone Girl. Funny how a book with such a twisted plot can be my idea of a relaxing night in.

Crazy broccoli at the Hillcrest farmer’s market! Eaman and I are getting pretty passionate about eating healthy, organic and sustainably (a product of moving to eco-conscious California and Eaman starting an eco-conscious business). We’ve been reading way too much about the atrocious practices in American food production, but it’s encouraging us to make better decisions. One of them is to cut costs elsewhere and devote more money to better quality food, like farmer’s market produce. If you really want to get into it, check out the site FoodBabe.com. This blogger investigates the truth behind what’s in our food, and the results are both fascinating and depressing.

Hope you had a great weekend and are enjoying a little breather if you have the day off (not that I do!).

i have been trying to do more organic dairy, meat and local produce as well. Its just unfortunate that our food system is soooo bad. I bet farmers market in California is so much better than Dallas.

Organic dairy was my first step! They say that’s one of the top priorities when it comes to clean eating. Go Dixya!

Sounds like you had a wonderful (and exhausting) time with the parental unit! The broccoli-cauliflower hybrid is called Romanesco. I discovered it for the first time last year at the Kailua farmers market. I steamed it and lightly seasoned it with salt and pepper. I’m curious to know if you bought any and how you may have prepared it.
