Saturday was Eaman’s birthday, and on Friday, a small group of us went to Ponce’s, one of the few Tex-Mex spots in San Diego. (Sometimes you just need a bowl of queso, am I right?) Ponce’s is located in Kensington, and though that neighborhood is largely quiet and residential, all of the restaurants and bars are situated on a two-stretch block, which means it’s automatically lively and bustling on a weekend night. (It’s pretty quiet on weekday nights.) All that to say, Ponce’s is a fabulous place for a birthday. Make sure to get the chile con queso, steak fajitas and churros filled with Bavarian cream!
After Ponce’s, we ended up at Air Conditioned Lounge, a kitschy, kooky, 70s-themed bar in Normal Heights. I wasn’t thrilled about paying $5 cover for a DJ, but he was actually pretty excellent. And I just love that James Bond artwork.
I ordered a custom wooden peg doll from Goose Grease Shop, a fair-trade, Brooklyn-based company that works with carpenters and female artisans in Bogota, Colombia to create these cool, personalized wedding cake toppers and peg doll sets. I asked them to create a little Iranian World Cup player for Eaman’s birthday, and they did a fantastic job. Again, small business for the win.
Saturday was one for the books. I was invited to a day of fun at the famous Hotel del Coronado, and I’ll be sharing more about it on Wednesday.
This guy.
