weekend recap

October 6, 2014

A few snaps from my weekend thanks to my iPhone…

On the one hand, this summer has been a psychotic beast that just won’t quit. On the other hand, I’d much rather be hot, hot, hot than cold and miserable. Last week I was cold and miserable in Minneapolis, so even though it was a scorcher this past weekend, I was loving the heat and warmth on my skin. We took Teddy and our friend’s pup Tilly to the Coronado dog beach so we could all cool down. Teddy behaved, Eaman bodyboarded and I played with a 3-month-old English bulldog puppy. It was one of the most perfect beach visits. And T was so exhausted he fell asleep on Tilly’s bum.

south-park-walkabout

The quarterly South Park Walkabout—this past Saturday was the fall installment—is one of my favorite events in the city because it combines my favorite neighborhood, some of my favorite local shops and a great sense of community.

Post-Walkabout, we stayed in South Park to try the new Piacere Mio. You may remember that it previously existed as a gelato shop but has since transformed into a very cute, very charming Italian restaurant. More to come on that in a separate post.

Post-post-Walkabout, Eaman and I headed to Albie’s Beef Inn, a piano bar adjacent to the Mission Valley Travelodge. The restaurant is famous for its carnivorous menu, but we settled into a vinyl banquette for drinks and some tunes. The live music veers on classic oldies, there are (beautiful) paintings of naked women everywhere and the whole vibe is retro-kitsch, but it all works in a weird way. The crowd is definitively older, and I can’t help but quote the so-wrong-but-so-funny Yelp review that stated that Albie’s Beef Inn has a very lively vibe for people so close to death. Sorry. (And the reviewer said he was kidding!)

This weekend we also saw Gone Girl (a very good and faithful adaptation) and I went to the always delicious Sab-e-Lee with a friend. All in all, a great weekend and primer for a fun week ahead in Sedona.

For now, happy Monday!
