weekend recap

August 18, 2014

A glimpse of my weekend, according to my iPhone…

golden-retriever-san-diego

We’re watching our friend’s golden retriever, Tilly, for the next 8 days, and it’s always a good time when she’s over, not just because she and Teddy get along so well, but because our place turns into an apartment full of kids—us included. This shot of them holding paws just kills me.

El Indio, San Diego // My SoCal'd Life

Eaman and I took most of the day off Friday and spent it at the beach with Teddy (before Tilly arrived). We were at the Coronado dog beach for 3.5 hours, and alternated between body-boarding (so fun!!!!), laying out and playing fetch with Teddy, who was surprisingly well-behaved. (He typically eats every single strand of seaweed, but the beach was seaweed-free that day.) It felt like we were all on vacation. Usually we have trouble shutting off, but something clicked and it was like all the gunk filtered out, like we could finally enjoy the present moment without having to think about what’s next. And as we decided later, what’s next was enchiladas and nachos at El Indio in Mission Hills.*

D-bar-san-diego-dessert

Our close friends from college and NYC recently moved here, and it’s been so fun having someone from our “old life” in this “new life.” We caught up over the DIY ice cream sundae dessert at D Bar, and while we usually love that place, service that night was awful. That said, the sundae was great.

Work has been going really well for me lately and as a treat for that, Eaman planned a day of fun on Saturday involving a walk with the pups through South Park, coffee at the Captain Kirk’s stand, Pure Cupcakes (the passion fruit-coconut is a must), dinner at OB Noodle House (the pho is divine), and drinks at The Pearl Hotel.

Pearl Hotel, San Diego // My SoCal'd Life

The Pearl Hotel is a midcentury-style hotel in Point Loma with a restaurant and al fresco seating surrounding the retro pool, along with really excellent cocktails, hammocks and movies playing on the projection screen. The whole experience feels like an escape to Palm Springs, and I love how it makes for a fun, unique night out. Definitely a place you’ll want to take visitors to.

This was just us getting gas, but that sad look on Teddy’s face while Eaman pets Tilly is too good.

library-yoga-events-san-diego

San Diego’s Central Library partners with my yoga studio, Hale Holistic, for free vinyasa classes every month on the Library’s patio entrance. I’ve done their free morning class before, but last night’s was a gentle twilight class at sunset. It was also my first opportunity to use the Lululemon yoga mat Eaman got me as a gift. Besides the fact that my old mat was falling apart, this new mat has a special technology that soaks in your sweat as you get your downward dog on. Knowing how much I sweat and my new commitment to yoga, he thoughtfully chose this one for me. And if you’re interested in trying a free class, check the Library’s Instagram feed for updates on future classes.

Happy Monday!

*I’d hate for you to think my weekends are always perfect. Here’s some evidence of otherwise: Teddy drank so much salt water in our 3+ hours at the beach Friday that The World’s Most Sensitive Dog had quite the accident Saturday morning. In his crate. On his bed. And on the carpet, too. But he looked so guilty and embarrassed that we couldn’t be mad at him. So there you go. A perfectly imperfect but amazing weekend.

Welps, I’m pretty jealous of the food in SD. Seems like we have the exact same taste. Firstly, can you please post pictures of the enchiladas/tacos next time? Although I’ll be super jelly, those have to be shown :) Second, passion fruit is the best (my favorite fruit in SE Asia!!) and pho is my life. Your food for the weekend sounds like perfection.

I always miss the free yoga!

I absolutely LOVE The Pearl! Not a fan of El Indio, but I’m a snobby [half]Mexican.

You’re not the first person to tell me that about El Indio! I like a few things (not everything), but it mostly just holds a special place in my heart because it’s the first place we went to while visiting SD in 2010 *and* the first place when we moved here in 2013 :)
