our rituals: scott and elise grice of hey, sweet pea

September 13, 2013

One thing I took from our year-long backpacking trip is that a person’s energy can be one of the best ways to connect (or stay away from someone). And all I could feel when I learned about branding/design agency Hey, Sweet Pea from random Internet browsing is oodles of positivity. From their fun bios to their active and engaging Facebook page, this husband-and-wife team are all about motivation and goal-setting. Even though I haven’t worked with them, browsing on their site and social media channels for even a few minutes made me want to go-go-go.

Let’s get to know this cute, talented couple on today’s rituals.

Rock climbing
There are few things that can bring me back to center like holding onto a big piece of rock with the wind blowing around me and sweat dripping off my brow. The blood is pumping, my fear of heights is begging me to get down, and the world is quiet. It’s just me and the earth in my hands. About the only thing better is sharing these experiences with other people and getting them hooked on the rush.

Dancing to the record player
Ever night after work we say goodbye to our team, wander downstairs and walk straight to our record player. We have 3 or 4 dozen records, mostly jazz, big band, and retro Disney movie soundtracks. We love dancing in the living room (sometimes as a family with the pooches) before starting dinner. It’s become a ritual that helps us forget the day, no matter how hard it was, and get some family time. It’s probably my favorite part of the day.

Dog Swimming
For some reason, it is super relaxing for me to watch our dogs swimming in the creeks around here. It usually starts every Sat morning (how they know it’s the weekend I’ll never understand). The dogs get excited and run and find their collars knowing that it’s adventure day. When we pull into the gravel parking lot they start bouncing off the car walls. Juno (3 months) can only swim for 10 minutes before she’s too tired but Kenya (3 years) could swim all day. She doesn’t even need us to throw sticks anymore. She just swims laps. It makes me smile the entire the time.

Cruising
I guess I should just say “vacationing.” We can only make it about 6 months before we start getting worn out. We made an agreement when we first got married to make sure that we vacationed frequently as a way to retreat, recharge, and focus on us. So far that looks like alternating 3-4 weekend trips with week-long cruises every 3 months. It’s the only way for us to keep ourselves sane (and it doubles as a way to keep us in love!)

Thrifting
I guess you could call us modern-day treasure hunters (at least in spirit). After a long day, sifting through piles of junk in a store, someone’s garage, or an actual junk shop is just what I need! I love seeing the potential in things that most people would miss. The trick is patience. We don’t always come home with the trunk full. Sometimes we check out 3-4 places and don’t find anything. But it’s not about buying (or having) things; it’s about the thrill of the hunt!

Monthly Midday Movies
About once a month we take our entire team to the movies in the middle of a work day. It’s important for us to have a fun work environment and it’s too easy to get bogged down in work and forget to come up for air. So after lunch, we all pile into the car and head for the closest theater. The last movie we saw was Jobs. It’s a good way to build team unity and remember to not take our to-do-lists too seriously.

Thanks, guys! You can also find Team Hey Sweet Pea on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Instagram.
