my rituals: rhiannon marquis of fashion week san diego

March 22, 2013

I met Rhiannon Marquis last month at a networking event and it wasn’t long before I realized this was my kind of girl. Of all the things she pointed out upon reading this blog, she told me that Cravory cookies, Clueless and farmer’s/flea markets were three (or I guess four) of her favorite things in life. Are we well-matched or what?

She’s spent time in both Hawaii and Orange County, but this born-and-bred San Diegan calls SD home. She studied film at Cal State Long Beach but went on to work in the wireless industry for 10 years before landing her dream gig: marketing and sales for Fashion Week San Diego and APA Consulting. “The best part is that every day we’re helping someone else achieve their dreams, whether it’s helping an emerging designer launch their career or a small business owner achieve success,” she says.

Today, Rhiannon tells us about wanting to direct music videos and jamming to Hawaiian music in her car. Let’s see what that’s all about…

Name: Rhiannon Marquis
Age: 31
Hometown: San Diego, CA
Current: San Diego, CA
Profession: Marketing & Sales Director for Fashion Week San Diego / APA Business Consulting

Music videos and a good magazine
I love some good me-time to wind down and relax. My favorite way to do that is to curl up on the couch with a good magazine (InStyle, Lucky, Marie Claire, Rolling Stone, and San Diego Magazine are in my monthly rotation), turn on the TV, and switch back and forth between VH1 Soul and MTV Jams. I’m such a sucker for music videos. When I was a little girl and people would ask me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I’d always say, “I want to be a music video director!” My favorite, by far, is Live Soul. It’s an hour of some of the greatest live R&B/hip-hop performance ever. I also love when they air Soul Stories. It’s a collection of music videos from one R&B artist. As you can tell, I love hip-hop and R&B, especially old school!

Hawaiian music
This is the ritual that really puts a smile on my face! When I get ready in the morning, I connect my phone to my radio, turn on my TuneIn Radio App, and listen to the Hawaiian Radio Stations. My mom and a lot of my family is from Hawaii and we lived there when I was kid. When we moved back to San Diego we were still immersed in the culture because my sisters and I danced hula for a Polynesian group. We danced in competitions and events throughout Southern California. Most of my favorite childhood memories were during that time. Hawaii is also a special for my husband and I. We spent our first real vacation as a couple in Maui and our honeymoon in Kauai. Listening to the radio stations in Hawaii brings back all those great memories and instantly transports me back to the islands.

Guilty pleasure TV
I have horrible taste in TV and I’m not afraid to admit that. Not to sound like too much of a couch potato, but I love some good reality TV. I can’t help it! I watch it all, Keeping up with the Kardashians, Jersey Shore, Empire Girls, Property Wars, American Idol, X Factor — the list could go on. I also have this obsession with teen high school shows. I’m in my 30s, but I can’t get enough of Glee, The Carrie Diaries, Gossip Girl, The O.C., and Pretty Little Liars, just to name a few. It’s pretty bad; I feel horrible for my husband.

Thanks, Rhiannon! Have a good weekend, friends!
