Even though I’m a writer, I’ve rarely had friends in the biz. My best childhood friends are doctors, my college friends are techies and engineers, and my boyfriend is a Wall Streeter-turned-entreprenuer. I love that they expose me to new ideas and prevent me from talking shop after hours, but meeting U-T San Diego reporter Katherine Harvey reminded me that it’s pretty amazing to have a friend who speaks the same career lingo.

The Birmingham-bred writer worked at an Alabama newspaper before moving to Hawaii to write for the Honolulu Civil Beat, where she won tons of accolades for her work. Now she covers small business and retail for the U-T, San Diego’s major paper, and—get this—has a bone broth business with her husband.

Today she talks about canine therapy, the great outdoors and her chef husband.

Name: Katherine P. Harvey
Age: 29
Hometown: Birmingham, Ala.
Current city: San Diego, Calif.
Professional title: Retail and small-business reporter

Puppy cuddles. I don’t get a lot of down time, so when I do get to relax, I try to make the most of it. The best way I’ve found to do that is by cuddling with our dog, Murph. He’s big and the fastest runner at the dog park, but he is so chill at home that just sitting next to him lowers my heart rate. When I’m cuddling with him in the mornings and especially the evenings after work, I feel as if nothing could be wrong in this world. He has a very calming influence, and I think could be a true therapy dog. He’s certainly mine.

Finding the next summit. My husband and I love the outdoors, and take every possible opportunity to get outside, hike and see something we haven’t laid eyes on before. There are such tremendous rewards waiting for those willing to put in the time and make the effort to go find those secluded places that can only be fully appreciated in person. Bonus: It forces you to disconnect and relax. And you often are getting a workout in at the same time.

Slow food. Ryan is a chef, and I’m from the South, so there’s a deep and long-running relationship with food in our home. There’s nothing like browsing the stalls together at the farmers market, sharing our fresh finds and then coming home to make delicious meals together that you could never find in a restaurant. It’s just incredibly therapeutic and romantic to sip a glass of wine while making a culinary creation together, and then enjoy our masterpiece on the back patio. We covet those weekend days when we can do this.

Thanks, Katherine! You can also find her on Twitter and Instagram.

Happy Friday!
