brunch at queenstown public house

The decor got me from the start. At Queenstown Public House, a historic house-turned-restaurant in Little Italy, antiquing, upcycling, and bringing the indoors out is what the aesthetic is all about. Watering cans become planters, wire cages house pendant lights, and living room lamps are positioned on the patio. Conceived by Pearl Hotel and Vin de Syrah designer Michael Soriano with co-designers Alina Leyton and Dustin Towery, there are amazing details, including sheeps hanging upside down from the ceiling (scroll ahead for that). And as you’d expect, the space makes for a pretty stellar brunch spot.

Eaman and I headed there this past Saturday, and I just couldn’t stop taking pictures—of the decor, of the food, of the bright blood orange mimosa. I ordered the Kiwi breakfast, a nod to the restaurant’s New Zealand affiliation, and with it came two soft-boiled eggs (runny just how I like ’em!), a salad with tomatoes and creamy burrata, and seasoned baguette. (I told them to hold the Vegemite; I’ve lived in Australia and never could get on board with that salty yeast spread.) Eaman’s lamb hash was a warm skillet of comfort food with potatoes, parsnips, bacon, poached eggs, hollandaise, and more.

And Bird Rock Coffee! I summoned the brunch gods, and they’ve answered. Queenstown serves my favorite local brew (free refills, too). Eaman went with the smooth blood orange mimosa, and judging by their impressive bar alone, they make a good cocktail.

It might just be my favorite brunch patio in all of San Diego—spacious, intimate, and a wee bit whimsical with a gourmet menu in a casual space. Oh, and I hear the burger is a knockout.
