Monello in Little Italy, San Diego

1. The sleek and inviting Monello—sister restaurant and neighbor to Bencotto—brings traditional Milanese eats and customs to the Little Italy neighborhood. I finally got to try it last month and went home with the most pleasant bread and cheese food coma. Favorites included the panzerotti (lightly fried mini calzones), funghi fritti (fried portobello mushrooms served with a black truffle aioli) and margherita pizza. The real star of the show, however, is the raspa durra cheese, a young cow’s milk that pretty much melts in your mouth. Also worth noting is Monello’s apertivo. Though it falls around the American happy hour time of 4-7 p.m., it’s a Milanese tradition that has nothing to do with half-price drinks. Instead you pay full price for drinks—stay with me—and get to eat a few small plates for free.

Hanna's Gourmet, San Diego // My SoCal'd Life, a lifestyle blog

3. Hanna’s Gourmet is one of the best restaurants I’ve been to in San Diego. It may even be one of the best restaurants I’ve ever been to period. Global-inspired menu, a sweet owner, impeccable service—there’s a lot to love.

Choice Superfood & Juicery, Carlsbad, California

4. I know, I know: another juice bar. But Choice Superfood and Juicery in Carlsbad Village has one of the coolest set-ups in the city. Housed in the spot formerly occupied by waffle sandwich purveyor BOXD, the walk-up healthy restaurant has cold-pressed juices, smoothies, acai bowls, quinoa sushi and more, and a location in a cute parklet complete with Astroturf, picnic tables, and murals by local artists.

We haven’t been to Choice yet, even though we live in Carlsbad! We are so lame. It looks awesome, though, so we’ll definitely have to check it out soon (particularly since we’re on Whole 30, which limits our eating-out options!).
