My parents’ visit, Teddy’s 1st birthday, the San Diego Museum of Art’s Cultural & Cocktails event (Bollywood-themed this month!) and a few other beautiful San Diego vistas—here’s a look at my February.
Have a great weekend!

My relationship with coconut oil began with my grandmother. She would smooth the Indian beauty staple onto her hair almost every day, leaving the bathroom smelling like a tropical paradise. Since then, I’ve practiced my fair share of coconut oil beauty regimens — most recently = this coconut-brown sugar body scrub — but I needed to find a way to make a bigger dent in my big jar from Trader Joe’s.
Coconut oil has been so in vogue in food recipes these days, but I don’t love throwing it into just any dish. It has a distinct taste, and I don’t think it goes with everything. But I was on a mission to find (and share with you) three recipes that are totally awesome/totally delicious with the fragrant oil.
From breakfast to snack time to lunch, here are three coconut oil recipes you need to try right now:
On Friday I mentioned that I’d be sharing a neighborhood guide for South Park, so here I am! I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to do one on South Park, considering it’s my favorite place in all of San Diego. It’s small (comprised of just a few blocks here and there), quiet, filled with mostly small business (save one 7-Eleven!) and populated by a lot of young families. It is home to many of my San Diego favorites, but what I love most about South Park is the sense of community. Despite plenty of of hip(ster) spots, it manages to retain an Anytown, U.S.A. vibe. Oh, and it’s one of the most dog-friendly places I’ve ever seen.
If we decide to stay in San Diego, the dream is to buy one of South Park’s small, cottage-style homes. (We have one in mind and may or may not have snuck into the vacant house right before its new occupants moved in.) Here’s a look at why I <3 South Park.
I’ve always liked the saying, “What a difference a year can make” because I’m a person who thrives on change. So in the spirit of new, I thought it would be fun to update my own rituals. Between career shifts, boyfriend start-ups and a new dog, things have changed quite a bit since my first ritual rundown. Here’s a glimpse:
I love body scrub. I love it so much that I feel like a different person after using it. What I don’t love is how expensive the natural ones are. Sure I could pick one up at a drugstore for under $10, but those are typically filled with chemicals, artificial fragrances and other junk I shouldn’t be slathering all over my skin. But then I realized it’s stupid simple to make your own body scrubs — and you probably have most of the ingredients already!
A little glimpse of my last week and life as of late…
As I mentioned, my parents were in town last week, and in between the sightseeing, eating and subsequent food comas, my mom gave me this statue, which once belonged to her grandmother. The cow, which is meant to bring you good luck, has special meaning. Back in the day, some people in India would bring cows in to bless a new home. Now this little guy is in our home to hopefully send some good vibes our way.
Today’s my rituals is a treat for me because it comes to us from my good friend and San Diego Magazine associate art director, Gloria Tebelman. (I’m not big on Valentine’s Day, but I might as well give a nod to the holiday by offering today’s space to a good friend.) It’s no surprise why Gloria and I hit it off. She loves good food, working out (she’s a marathoner!), appreciates early mornings versus late nights out and loves to travel. To top it off, even though Gloria was raised just outside San Diego, her soul is a New Yorker’s. She has that stylish, cultural, driven je ne sais quoi that I thought I would never see again after leaving NYC.
I’m sort of in awe of how much she can accomplish in a day — waking up at 5 a.m. must have something to do with it — so I wanted to know more about her rituals. Today she discusses her love for drip coffee, Vogue and favorite spots to run in the city.
I’ve been busy playing tour guide for my parents, so I’m taking today off, but I’ll be back on Friday with a fun my rituals. In the meantime check out these cool, colorful bolas (pots) we saw in Old Town. In theory, I hate Old Town and its kitschy, touristy, totally phony Mexican everything, but I do think it’s a nice place to take family. You just have to ignore the shopkeepers dressed in ye olde costumes. Yikes.
