west elm’s new local shop + my favorite local finds

West Elm local shop // My SoCal'd Life, a lifestyle blog

Last night West Elm San Diego launched its local shop, a pilot program that brings local artists and their handcrafted goods to a bigger spotlight. A few locations across the U.S. have already launched their own iterations, but yesterday I got to see San Diego’s curated collection, which includes home decor, accessories, and gifts from all over California.

Ever since moving to San Diego and becoming invested/inspired by the city’s creative community, I’ve had a big urge to shop local and support small businesses. West Elm Local is such a cool way to bring these brands to the forefront.

Here are a few of my favorites:

These air plants by Bird and Feather, comprised of San Bernandino-based Marianne Gardner and Sean Maginity, come in the coolest hand-painted containers.

West Elm local // River Luna prints

San Diego native Marisa Redondo creates watercolor and archival prints with nature-related themes from her Northern California workspace.

I loved, loved, loved the leather goods by Bubo Handmade almost as much as I loved the mini profiles paired with each designer’s goods. And I love getting that extra detail of where they like to hang out in their neck of the woods.

I actually spotted Pacific Grove-based artist Rissa and her brand theCoastal many months ago, so it was a treat to see her get some love here at the store. She hand-paints her ceramic coaster sets and backs each with recycled cork.

Artist and Long Beach resident Eric Trine makes a variety of pieces—everything from sculptures to furniture—but included at the store are his unique geometric planters.

I’m a big fan of Julie Rais Ellis’ work at Rais Case, and not just because I know her personally. Her bags, pillows, and accessories incorporate cool hardware and re-purposed materials like Pendleton blankets and burlap coffee bags. I couldn’t get a good shot at the shop—dang, lighting and shadows!—but now you have to check out her full line of the RaisCase website.

I wanted to go to the launch but wasn’t able to get down there. I thought it was a one-time only thing, though; are they still selling those items at the store? I would love to check them out.

I’m not sure when exactly it runs until, but it’s definitely more than just one day. Hope you can check it out!
