a weekend nap when you really need it

May 12, 2014

la-visit

I’m not even going to try to fake it: I was exhausted this weekend and didn’t get time to write a proper post. Eaman, Teddy, and I drove up to L.A. to see one of my oldest, dearest friends, who just got engaged, just got a puppy, and is moving back to the East Coast. There was a lot to celebrate, but between the sun, laughing (of the ab-workout variety), and reigning in two maniac puppies, I came home Sunday and passed out for most of the day.

Usually I’d force myself out of nap time and get my work done. But for the first time in a long time, I took a break. I slept three hours on the couch. Then I did a DIY project (coming to the blog soon!) before crawling under the covers and passing out for another few hours. I actually turned to Eaman at one point and asked him, “When was the last time we even did this?” There’s always something (or someone) to take care of—or at least that’s how my restless brain perceives things.

So here’s to taking a break when you really need it and not feeling bad about it. Hope you had a good weekend!

my rituals: floral designer + illustrator nicole moser of bloem hill

May 9, 2014

Bloem-Hill-Nicole-2

I follow a lot of wedding planners on Instagram and Pinterest not because I’m itching to walk down the aisle, but because a part of me daydreams about becoming an event designer. Let’s be real though, I’d be kind of terrible at it. I don’t love working weekends, I crave a regular schedule, and I’m not the strongest of leaders. So you can understand why I like to live vicariously through them.

Writing for a wedding magazine has helped introduce me to more and more of these peops, and that’s how I stumbled upon Bloem Hill, an Encinitas-based floral design studio led by Nicole Moser. Her bouquets range from rustic and colorful to sleek and monochromatic. Luckily for us, she’s happy to impart her wisdom and recently taught a floral design workshop in partnership with Urban Craft Camp. Plus, she’s a San Diego gal through and through, so I wanted to get to know her a wee bit better.

Today she chats about traveling alone, color-spotting, and the next White Flag event. If you don’t know what the White Flag is, you must read ahead.

transforming flowers into fashion

Fashion illustrator Gracie Ciao // My SoCal'd Life, a lifestyle blog

I may be a writer by trade, but I love using this blog as a platform for exploring good design and style. And when I find something good, you better believe I’ll share it with you.

Case in point: These genius fashion illustrations created by Singapore student Gracie Ciao, who bends, shapes, and positions real flower petals into stunning dresses. Besides the vibrant colors, I love how just a little finessing results in texture and volume.

pineapple-coconut chia seed pudding

Pineapple-Coconut Chia Seed Pudding recipe // My SoCal'd Life, a lifestyle blog

Chia seed pudding seems to be all the rage in Blog Land, so after Pinning a few recipes to Pinterest, I finally bit the bullet and made a combination that was right up my alley: pineapple and coconut.

A little background: Chia seeds are extremely high in fiber, omega 3s, and protein, and are popular additions to smoothies, yogurt, salads, and baked treats. (I wrote about chia’s then-superfood status for Details magazine back in 2011.) Athletes love its slow-burn properties and throw the seeds in water for a pre-workout “fresca.” Leave the seeds in liquid over time, though, and the mixture turns into a gel, which brings us to pudding!

This chia seed pudding recipe is super easy, and given that I’ve been trying to decrease my sugar intake—I had two porcelain crowns put in at the start of the year, that’s how bad my sugar addiction is—I’m so excited to have a healthier option when I need something sweet.

my rituals: ceramic artist rissa sandman of theCoastal + a giveaway! [now closed]

Coasters. I’d like to thank Pinterest, craft blogs, and Instagram photos of perfectly styled tabletops for popularizing this seemingly minuscule home decor detail. Now I’m nuts for them. The patterns, the colors, the shapes—who knew I’d be gaga for something that keeps water rings off precious tables?

But there I was gawking at Rissa Sandman’s coasters on Pinterest one fateful night. I loved the simplicity of her designs (hand-painted styles that come alive on a blank white slate) and the use of recycled cork on the bottom. (And by the way, she’s currently offering free shipping with a coupon code on her Etsy page!) Even amidst a huge wholesale order, the central Californian carved out time to share her rituals—and a giveaway for a set of handmade coasters! More on that below:

video recap: april 2014 (the end)

April 30, 2014

Change is a good thing, and I’m always thinking about new ways to shift, tweak, and edit this blog. So for now, this will be the last installment of video recaps. Hope you’ve enjoyed them!

For my swan song, I’m recapping April, which included my birthday, some beach visits, the San Diego Museum of Art’s Art Alive event, a Padres game, San Diego Magazine‘s Best of North County party, and more. And it’s all set to my current favorite song, which I love mostly because the video is GENIUS.

strawberry picking at suzie’s farm

strawberry picking in San Diego // My SoCal'd Life, a lifestyle blog

When I started going to farmers markets in San Diego, I didn’t know where to begin. Everyone has his/her own version of what it takes to feel at home in a new city, and for me the idea of knowing the farmers in my city well enough to have favorite vendors sounded downright cozy.

Flash forward to a year later, and whenever I’m produce-hunting, Suzie’s Farm is my first stop. Their tomatoes are the most flavorful, their snap peas are perfect even when raw, their spinach is tender, and…the list goes on. The farm hosts seasonal events, and this past Saturday was the annual strawberry jam, a family-friendly fruit fest that includes music, food trucks (like the adorable Calexico Creamery ice cream trailer), games, and organic strawberry U-picking by the pound ($2.50/per pound).

It was a blast. Positive vibes, kids giddy over the prospect that fruit grows out of the ground (“this area’s a goldmine!” one said), and so many of the farm’s dogs roaming around in search of belly rubs and food scraps. We went home with seven pounds of strawberries, which sounds excessive, but you try passing up giant, palm-size, dark red berries. I’m freezing half (instructions below), and we’re savoring the other half this week. You know those people who say “fruit is nature’s candy”? I usually want to smack those people—except in this case. Suzie’s strawberries are sweet, juicy, little precious rubies. It’s the first time I’m totally OK skipping dessert in the name of fruit.

Here are scenes from a Saturday strawberry sesh:

Priya Matta, Tiffany & Co. art director // My SoCal'd Life, a lifestyle blog

As an art director for Tiffany & Co, Priya Matta clearly knows good design. It’s what led her to create these exquisite invitations for a wedding that got the front page-Martha Stewarts Weddings treatment and dissect fashion week themes on her blog, Love Made Visible.

But as it turns out, this girl has a keen eye for a whole lot more. Today Priya chats about appreciating a fine veal agnolotti, her crazy-cool fitness obsession, and what she’s discovered in her new neighborhood of Harlem.
